Year in Review
(December 9, 2004)
Im embarrassed that its been so long since I posted a new newsletter! Since this is both the first and last for 2004, I went back over the year to capture highlights and accomplishments, and realized there have been more than I thought.
Helping young people pick majors or careers this was a new area of focus for me in 2004. I had about 8 teenage clients for whom I did assessments to help them better understand the type of careers likely to suit their interests.
Career transition clients this still represents the largest number of my clients and I helped about 20 people through career transition in 2004.
Executive Coaching these are long term coaching engagements (usually 6 months) of working with executives or managers to take their personal performance to a higher level. I had a half dozen of these clients this year.
Team coaching and assessments this was a very prosperous area of my practice this year and also a favorite. I worked with several organizations to do either Birkman or Myers Briggs based teambuilding and visioning/strategic planning exercises. Getting everyone to have a shared sense of purpose is key to successful collaboration, as is understanding work style differences. My clients in this area were very pleased with the outcomes and I really enjoy doing this.
Practice Development we consultants have to spend about 1/3 of our time on business development, and my focus this year was on professional associations, expos and speaking engagements.
I did booths at the WBEA Expo, the Fort Bend Chamber Expo and the ASTD Houston annual conference (many thanks to Teresa Graham for helping me out on these!).
I did speaking engagements for the Association of Proposal Management Professionals, HR Houston and ASTD.
I took a 3-month seminar on Taking Flight with Your Practice and updated my business plan.
Volunteer Activities these are things I do to give back, including serving on two association boards (Institute of Management Consultants and The Professional Group). I started the year by volunteering to conduct Countdown to Your Future sessions for 8th graders in Fort Bend ISD, which I plan to do again in 2005. I also conducted the seminar Consulting: Dream Job or Worst Nightmare for the IMC and chaired the Operation Online committee for TPG. In 2005, I will serve as the President of TPG.
I hope your year 2004 ends on a great note and that 2005 will be prosperous for you!
